August 9, 2009 - Response to Allen Boyd's views on the budget

imageGOP can disagree without sniping - Tallahassee Democrat

Congressman Boyd complained about the GOP "sniping" as a hindrance to the health care plan, but the proposed plan is irresponsible, financially unsustainable and will increase never- ending debt to our children.

How can we expect the government to run a universal health care system when it cannot run our current Medicare and Medicaid system, in which nearly 20 percent of the cost is lost in fraud and waste every year.

In addition, the 50 million uninsured figure referenced by Boyd is misleading. Specifically, 45 percent of these uninsured citizens will be out of coverage for fewer than 4 months, 10 million are not even U.S. citizens, 17 million make $50,000+ a year and 7-10 million are eligible for Medicare or Medicaid but not enrolled. In all actuality, that leaves only about 10 million uninsured citizens who need REAL assistance.

The only way to lower health care costs is in the free market. Let individuals pick their own coverage to meet their specific needs, allow their insurance to be portable and let them shop across state lines for coverage. A family of four in Kentucky can buy coverage for $4,000 a year and in New York that same coverage costs $12,000. Why? Because of different mandates for each state. By enabling true competition between insurance companies health care costs will be lowered. This also allows the decision makers to be the citizen and the doctor — with no bureaucrat in between. We must also give tax breaks to individuals who buy their own health coverage so they are on a level playing field with employer-sponsored policies.

Finally, high risk pools must be established within states to help those with chronic diseases and to spread the risks among all insurers. Everyone has to share responsibility for their health care and the costs that go with it. The government cannot and should not do it for you.

June 29, 2008 - Eddie Hendry's Rebuttal to Congressman Boyd's Energy Policy

In response to Rep. Allen Boyd's "Straight talk on high gas prices" (op-ed, June 20), we continue to hear the typical Washington rhetoric that provides no solution to our energy issue. Real solutions to addressing our energy problems have been neglected for a long time. Are we going to wait even longer to address them?
